Did you know the average human eye can see 10 million unique colours? No wonder it seems like there’s always a brand new “it” shade. From metallics, to vibrant reds and yellows, to pastels and the blackest4 black – today’s hottest colours aren’t just colours – they’re statements. Want to learn more about the five trendiest colours in architecture and design right now? Read on!

Neutral Metallic
Metallics have gone from dramatic pops of bling to the perfect neutral. We’re talking silver, pewter, gold, copper and bronze. If these colours seem a bit too extravagant, think muted and matte instead of sparkle and shine. Metallics as neutrals create a feeling of quiet strength and permanence, while still lending a touch of luxuriousness. Pair with bright yet complimentary colours such as yellow and orange or go classic with strong blacks and greys.

Sunny Yellow
Warm, creamy yellows are in thanks to their ability to feel both natural and bold. And honestly, who doesn’t love a happy, sunshine-y yellow? There was a time when yellow was kept as a statement colour and paired with simple whites, blacks and greys. But no more! Unpredictable colour combinations such as yellow and turquoise or yellow and apple green make a design truly pop and bring about a carefree and youthful glow.

Vibrant Red
While red is usually thought of as a feature colour – meant to draw the eye in and add that wow factor – it also can be used as a harmonizing shade. This colour choice works particularly well if the red is both vibrant and earthy, because it harkens to organic reds found in nature. Think red leaves in the fall or the bright red of fresh cherries.

Statement Black
Architect Asif Khan’s design for a sponsored pavilion at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics is the perfect illustration of statement black. With a painted exterior that absorbs 99.9% of the surrounding light, the building stands as a star-smattered monolith against a blue sky. And while Khan’s design shows just how extreme statement black can get, grey-blacks are also on trend due to their ability to blend well with softer colours.

Minimalist Pastels
White on white used to be the number one choice for minimalistic designs. But the simplicity of a soft pastel can bring about the exact same sense of unfettered calmness. Washed greens and ultra soft pinks – alone or together – help create the feeling of an uncluttered oasis on the interior, or else harken to the sun-bleached exteriors in a seaside town.
